Behind the hero ingredients of SKIN by Ecostore is a story of sustainability. The picturesque Marlborough region at the top of the South Island of New Zealand is renowned for wine growing, particularly its world-famous Sauvignon Blanc, and the stunning Marlborough Sounds where mussel farms dot the waters. While the raw ingredients of both the hero ingredients, the marine and grape seed extract, are by-products of their respective industries, they can have fantastic applications for skin health. True to Ecostore’s philosophy on environmental sustainability, not only can our skin receive wonderful benefits through utilisation of these ingredients, but the environment is supported too.

The blackcurrant oil used in SKIN by Ecostore is derived from the seeds of blackcurrants, a by-product of concentrated blackcurrant juice. This use of a by-product, as a raw material, helps support environmental sustainability, keeping to the ethos of SKIN by Ecostore.

The blackcurrant oil used in SKIN by Ecostore is sourced in sunny Nelson, located in the South Island of New Zealand. The climate, which includes less polluted air and high ultra violet rays from the sun, provides ideal conditions for a variety of blackcurrants that have potent antioxidant capabilities. These antioxidants help fight free-radical damage within our skin, which may otherwise lead to wrinkles, sun spots, inflammation and accelerated skin aging. Antioxidants come in many forms, however the predominant varieties found in blackcurrants are phenolics (including both anthocyanins and flavonoids) and vitamin C – these berries have some of the highest anthocyanin levels in the world.

Another nutrient found in blackcurrant oil is essential fatty acids, in a perfect balance of omega-3, 6 and 9. These are deemed ‘essential’ as the body cannot produce them itself, so we must get them from other sources. When used in skin care, topical essential fatty acids assist with strengthening and improving the integrity of our skin’s barrier function. This leads to less water loss from the surface of the skin supporting more nourished, hydrated and moisturised skin. The use of this oil can also aid in smoother-looking skin.
